Confirm: After applying, System → Status should show the license type and expiry date.
A: Not for newer versions. FortiOS 7.2.0 and older had a 15-day trial; FortiOS 7.2.1+ shifted to the "Permanent Trial" model to allow indefinite usage of basic firewalling features.

Because the trial is strictly limited to 1 vCPU and 2 GB of RAM, running resource-heavy daemons (like extensive logging or local reporting) can quickly exhaust system resources. Keep your test configurations lean and forward event logs to an external syslog server or FortiAnalyzer if needed. Transitioning from Trial to Production
The new "permanent trial" does not expire. However, "permanent" in this context refers to the duration of use, not the feature set. The license remains valid indefinitely, allowing you to use the virtual firewall for learning, testing, and lab purposes for as long as you like, but within a limited set of resource and feature constraints (which we will detail shortly).

Open your web browser and navigate to the management IP address.
Despite these limitations, the core firewall features are functional. For basic labs, you can set up firewall rules, run routing protocols (BGP/OSPF), configure IPsec VPN site-to-site tunnels (with DES encryption), and even integrate with the free evaluation versions of FortiAnalyzer or FortiManager for centralized logging and management.
Look for the option in the dashboard widget that says or "Download License" . Select "Login with FortiCloud" . A pop-up browser window will appear. Enter your FortiCloud account credentials (email and password). The system will automatically communicate with the Fortinet servers, generate a license file specifically for your VM's UUID, and apply it. : You can verify your license status at any time by navigating to Dashboard > Status and checking the Virtual Machine widget.
