In the 7th century, the Pandya King of Madurai, Koon Pandiyan, abandoned Saivism and embraced Jainism. Concurrently, he fell severely ill with a burning fever that no physician could cure. The Queen, Mangayarkkarasiyar, and the Prime Minister, Kulachiraiyar, remained devout Saivites and invited the young saint Thirugnana Sambandar to cure the king.
