Perhaps the most lasting damage to the film's reputation came from the actresses themselves. Shortly after the Cannes win, both Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos publicly stated that they would never work with director Kechiche again. They described the filming experience as "horrible," citing grueling working conditions, including the extended sex scene which took 10 days to shoot and left them in tears. In response, Kechiche accused the actresses of slander and "indecent" behavior, creating a public and bitter feud between the director and his stars. The controversy eventually escalated to the point where Kechiche threatened legal action against Léa Seydoux for defamation.
